Elected in 1999 on behalf of the French-speaking Belgian Green Party Ecolo, as the first non-Belgian representative and the first Italian national to be elected to a political office outside Italy. Re-elected in 2004 on behalf of the Italian Green Party (Federazione dei Verdi). Co-President of the Green/EFA Group with Daniel Cohn-Bendit from 2002 to 2009.
