Meloni has missed another valuable opportunity to prove that she is a leader who can reduce tensions and dispel fake news. Instead, following in the footsteps of her inspiration, Trump, she has chosen to fan the flames of polarisation by telling her usual lies about a 'left' that is happy about Kieran's death.

This is the kind of dangerous and dishonest manipulation typical of right-wing leaders who, rather than putting out the fire, feed it after starting it. But who is really inciting violence? Those who criticise Kierk's evil and racist ideas harshly but without violence, or those who support them? It certainly can't be those who cultivate double standards against an unspecified 'left' for the tragic and unjust death of a young man with dangerous ideas, while remaining silent about the barbaric murder of the former president of the Minnesota Assembly and the arson attack on Governor Shapiro's home.

A true leader does not manipulate reality in order to attack their political opponents unfairly. Unfortunately, neither Meloni nor her supporters are in government to serve the interests of all Italians. They are only there to favour their own supporters in all areas, from culture to economics and from beach resorts to oil companies.

Once again, our prime minister is unable to look beyond her own supporters.

This is why our constructive opposition, which aims to regain the majority, must not only include good ideas and effective communication strategies against victimisation and bad policies, but also concrete examples of empathy and openness to dialogue. It must create opportunities for encounters with those who are very different from us. This is the essence of democracy and of a rich, peaceful society. Even within the opposition, there are those who prefer strong words and division to stay in the media spotlight and ensure our defeat. Be wary, be very wary, and do something else instead.
